Job Description

Description:
The Senior Substation Engineer will lead the preparation of design deliverables for new and modified high-voltage (13kV to 765kV) electrical power substation projects. The Senior Substation Engineer will work with the project team through the design and construction process, adapting engineering plans according to budget constraints, design factors, or client needs.

Responsibilities:
• Serve as a technical lead on high voltage substation projects, providing oversight and direction across the full project lifecycle (concept through construction)
• Remain involved in design execution, but with greater emphasis on:
o Reviewing and approving design deliverables
o Ensuring technical accuracy, constructability, and adherence to standards
o Resolving complex technical issues rather than producing routine drawings
• Lead, mentor, and train junior and mid level engineers
o Provide day to day technical guidance
o Perform design quality reviews and coaching
o Support skill development and succession planning within the team
• Act as the technical point of contact for clients
o Participate in technical discussions and design reviews
o Support client decision making on scope, schedule, and technical approach
o Collaborate closely with Project Managers, who remain primarily financially and contract focused
• Play a key role in proposal development and pursuit work
o Contribute to technical approaches, execution strategies, and staffing plans
o Support schedule development, level of effort estimates, and risk identification
o Participate in client presentations and pursuit meetings
• Support project execution and delivery
o Assist PMs with technical input related to schedule, scope, and execution risks
o Support coordination with construction teams, especially in EPC delivery environments

Required Skills & Experience

Requirements:
• 7–10+ years substation experience = Senior
• High voltage experience required (must be 20kV+)
• Physical substation design or Protection and Controls Design
• Utilities background strongly preferred
• Infrastructure background acceptable only if high voltage
• PE preferred for Senior
o Must explain plan to obtain within ~1 year if not licensed
• PMP is a plus, not required
• MicroStation required
• AutoCAD is a plus
• Bachelors in EE or related (ABET accredited)
