The Ambulatory RN role focuses on delivering high-quality patient care in an outpatient setting. Nurses typically manage 7–14 prescheduled patients per day for a variety of treatments. Responsibilities include placing IVs or accessing ports, drawing and sending labs, performing patient assessments, and documenting in the electronic health record (EPIC). Once lab results are available, the RN determines whether the patient is cleared to receive chemotherapy or other therapies. If approved, the RN releases the patient in EPIC and notifies the pharmacy to prepare the medication.
While nurses do not mix medications, they premedicate patients with drugs such as antihistamines, anti-nausea medications, and steroids before administering the prescribed therapy, whether injectable or infusible. The nurse then monitors the patient throughout treatment, and completes post-treatment tasks such as removing IV or port access, and safely discharging the patient.
Chemo Administration:
Chemotherapy is more complex and involves caring for patients who are often more acutely ill or have multiple comorbidities. These treatments may include bi-specific therapies that fight tumors in two ways, requiring a broader skill set and heightened attention to detail. Nurses administering chemo must be certified, demonstrating their ability to manage these advanced treatments safely. While the workflow is similar, chemo patients require more intensive monitoring and care due to the complexity of their condition and therapy
