Job Description
We are supporting a small Catholic graduate school (70–80 students) in Washington, DC focused on theology and philosophy programs in identifying a hands-on Controller. This is an immediate need due to the current Controller transitioning out at the end of the month. The priority is to bring on a contractor ASAP to ensure continuity and complete a knowledge transfer/overlap next week.
Responsibilities include:
• Own full-cycle accounting and financial reporting
• Manage month-end close and ensure accuracy of financials
• Prepare and present reports to leadership (President, COO, Dean)
• Translate financial data into clear insights for non-financial stakeholders
• Support audit readiness and general compliance
• Identify and improve accounting processes where needed

Required Skills & Experience
• Strong technical accounting background
• Prior experience in a Controller or hands-on senior accounting role
• Ability to operate independently (no direct reports)
• Experience presenting financials to executive/non-financial audiences
Nice to Have Skills & Experience
• CPA (preferred, not required)
• Experience in:
○ Non-profit organizations
○ Academic or higher education environments
