Job Description
The HVAC Technician is responsible for the reliable operation, maintenance, and troubleshooting of HVAC equipment and systems. This role requires sound judgment within established procedures to diagnose issues and develop practical, effective solutions to a wide range of technical problems. Work objectives are clearly defined and results-driven.
Responsibilities include conducting routine inspections of all engineering systems and equipment, monitoring system performance, and maintaining accurate operating logs. The technician will operate, monitor, and maintain site-critical engineering systems that provide heating, ventilation, air conditioning, utility water, and conditioned water in accordance with system diagrams, operating manuals, manufacturer specifications, and industry best practices.
The role also involves operating and monitoring the facility’s Building Automation System (BAS), disabling and re-arming fire alarm panels as required, and safely operating and maintaining gas-fired steam boilers. Technicians must proficiently use diagnostic and testing equipment related to building systems, analyze test results, and document findings.
Additional duties include performing preventive and corrective maintenance on engineering systems and equipment such as chillers, IFUs, VAV systems, HVAC controls, and fire and life safety sprinkler systems. The technician will inspect, adjust, and service mechanical equipment while adhering to energy efficiency models and building performance standards.
The HVAC Technician is expected to mentor and support less experienced technicians, respond to emergency situations, and carry out all necessary actions to protect occupants, property, and mission-critical operations. Under minimal supervision, the technician will perform facilities and mission-critical environment maintenance activities, including the operation and upkeep of HVAC systems, CRAC units, life safety systems, building automation systems, and supporting utility systems.

Required Skills & Experience
Candidates must possess a high school diploma or GED and have a minimum of 6+ years of hands-on experience working with complex HVAC systems and equipment, including chillers, boilers, package units, and VAV systems (direct digital, pneumatic, and automated control systems).
Selected applicants will be required to undergo a government security investigation and must meet eligibility requirements for access to classified information, including U.S. citizenship. The ability to obtain and maintain HSPD and Secret clearance is required; active HSPD-12 and Secret clearance is preferred.
Applicants must hold a current VA, MD, or DC Journeyman License or VMET certification, or be able to obtain a Journeyman License within 30 days of employment.
Nice to Have Skills & Experience
Completion of an HVAC technical training program through a vocational or technical school, or a recognized apprenticeship program, is strongly preferred.
