Job Description

Insight Global is seeking a Automation Lab Operations Engineer for one of our automotive technology clients. This individual will own day-to-day operations of the hardware testing and automation lab, supporting both development and QA teams through hands-on hardware setup, rack buildouts, inventory management, and technical troubleshooting.
This role is ideal for someone who enjoys building and modifying hardware, creating custom wiring solutions, managing lab logistics, and serving as the go-to resource for maintaining test environments and supporting engineering teams.
Responsibilities

Build, assemble, and maintain automation racks and testing environments
Install, route, and manage Ethernet, power, and communication cabling
Perform OS imaging and initial configuration of test PCs and rack-mounted systems
Build, modify, and repair custom wiring harnesses through soldering, crimping, and connector assembly
Perform hardware modifications, upgrades, and troubleshooting on Test Development Kits (TDKs), ECUs, and automation benches
Manage flashing stations and maintain proper software and firmware versions across testing hardware
Serve as the primary owner of the lab distribution hub, coordinating shipping and receiving activities
Track and manage inventory of TDKs, ECUs, tools, racks, and testing equipment
Provide hands-on support to QA engineers and developers with bench setup, hardware failures, and connectivity issues
Troubleshoot power, wiring, and hardware-related issues to minimize downtime and keep testing environments operational

Required Skills & Experience

Experience building, assembling, and maintaining hardware, IT, or automation racks.
Hands-on experience with soldering, crimping, connector assembly, and wiring harness modifications.
Knowledge of electrical fundamentals, pinout diagrams, and basic schematics.
Experience flashing firmware, embedded software, operating systems, or hardware images.
Strong inventory management, logistics coordination, and organizational skills.
Ability to troubleshoot hardware, power, and connectivity issues independently.
Strong communication skills with the ability to support cross-functional engineering teams.
Comfortable working in a hands-on lab environment and managing multiple priorities.

Nice to Have Skills & Experience

Experience in automotive engineering, embedded systems, telematics, or hardware validation environments.
Familiarity with Test Development Kits (TDKs), Electronic Control Units (ECUs), and automotive testing workflows.
Exposure to CAN, LIN, or other vehicle communication protocols and tools.
Experience with inventory tracking, asset management, or logistics systems.
Previous support experience within QA, validation, or R&D lab environments.
