Job Description

The Prototype Fabricator / Composite Technician is responsible for the fabrication, assembly, and installation of advanced composite components and vehicle structures. This individual will work closely with engineering teams to interpret designs and execute high-quality builds using carbon fiber and fiberglass materials.
This role requires strong hands-on expertise in wet layup and vacuum bagging processes, with a focus on producing lightweight, high-performance prototypes—particularly for next-generation vehicle applications.

Required Skills & Experience

Key Responsibilities:
- Read, interpret, and build from blueprints, 3D CAD models, and engineering drawings
- Perform precision wet layup and vacuum bagging of carbon fiber and fiberglass components
- Prepare, clean, and treat molds using release agents, waxes, and coatings
- Select, mix, and apply resin systems (epoxy, polyester, vinyl ester) per engineering specifications
- Apply vacuum bagging materials (peel ply, breather, bleeder, sealant tape) to ensure proper consolidation
- Trim, sand, and finish composite parts using hand and pneumatic tools (grinders, sanders, Dremels, etc.)
- Perform secondary bonding of composite-to-composite and composite-to-metal structures
- Operate shop equipment such as waterjets, bandsaws, and table saws for material prep
- Execute fabrication tasks independently while meeting quality standards and deadlines
- Adhere to safety protocols, including PPE usage, vapor mitigation, and dust control

Requirements:
- Need metal fabrication experience!!!!! (can be lighter on composites)
- Some experience in composite fabrication (carbon fiber and fiberglass)
- Strong understanding of vacuum bagging processes, including bag setup and troubleshooting leaks
- Experience working with composite materials, including different weaves (plain, twill, satin) and core materials (foam, honeycomb)
- Knowledge of resin chemistry, including mix ratios, catalyst percentages, pot life, and curing requirements
- Proficient in measurement and layout using tools such as calipers and tape measures
- Strong attention to detail, organization, and adherence to clean-room standards
- Ability to track materials, including resin shelf life and usage

Physical Requirements:
Ability to lift 50+ lbs consistently
Ability to stand for extended periods and perform physical tasks such as bending, kneeling, and crouching

Composite fabrication tools (vacuum bagging systems, molds, release agents)
Resin systems: epoxy, polyester, vinyl ester
Handheld and pneumatic tools (grinders, sanders, Dremels)
Shop equipment: waterjets, bandsaws, table saws
Measurement and layout tools (calipers, tape measures, fixturing tools)

Nice to Have Skills & Experience

Experience working with complex mold geometries and multi-part tooling
Familiarity with 2D and 3D CAD software
Experience operating CNC equipment (e.g., waterjet or laser cutting for ply cutting)
Basic welding and metal fabrication experience (MIG/TIG) for multi-material assemblies
