Job Description
The Conventional Machinist I is responsible for setting up and operating a variety of conventional machine tools to manufacture precision parts and components. This role involves fabricating, modifying, and repairing mechanical parts and equipment while maintaining strict quality and safety standards. The Machinist applies foundational knowledge of machining practices, shop mathematics, metal properties, blueprints, and Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing (GD&T) to produce parts that meet exact specifications.
Essential Functions:
- Set up and operate conventional machine tools including lathes, milling machines, grinders, shapers, and drill presses to produce precision parts
- Machine components to specifications using blueprints, drawings, and work instructions
- Measure, inspect, and verify completed parts using precision measuring instruments such as micrometers, calipers, and height gauges
- Interpret engineering drawings and GD&T requirements to determine machining methods and sequences
- Select appropriate tools, fixtures, materials, and cutting parameters for each job
- Align and secure workpieces, cutting tools, attachments, and accessories prior to machining
- Monitor machine feeds, speeds, and cutting conditions to ensure quality and efficiency
- Detect machine malfunctions through observation and sound, and make adjustments as needed
- Communicate effectively with engineering, supervisory, and manufacturing personnel regarding technical requirements and production issues
- Maintain a clean, safe, and organized work environment in accordance with company and safety regulations
- Perform other duties as assigned by supervisor or management

Required Skills & Experience
- Minimum of 1 year of training or hands-on experience in conventional machining, including on-the-job and/or informal training
- Able to read and interpret blueprints
- High school diploma
Nice to Have Skills & Experience
- Experience working in an aerospace manufacturing environment
- Completion of machine shop coursework at a technical school or community college
- Working knowledge of basic mathematics, geometry, and trigonometry as applied to machining
