Job Description
This role oversees the underwriting process and ensures that loan quality and production goals are met in assigned regions. You will manage a team of 12-13 Underwriters, make sure loans are completed on time, and ensure all work meets company, investor, and government standards. You’ll also handle credit-related questions, support operations leaders, improve processes, and develop your team.
Key Responsibilities
• Keep track of the loan pipeline and balance team workloads.
• Ensure loans are underwritten correctly, follow regulations, and meet turnaround expectations.
• Coach the team to meet performance goals in quality, speed, and service.
• Review approved and declined loans each month to ensure quality and provide team training.
• Respond quickly to audit findings and help resolve issues identified by Post Closing, QA, and investors.
• Help Operations Managers train branch teams on disclosures, systems, and underwriting procedures.
• Stay current on industry/regulatory changes and recommend policy updates.
• Monitor and guide the use of automated underwriting tools (related to training and updates).
• Analyze reports to identify risks and opportunities in loan production.
• Research issues using internal systems and external sources to ensure compliance.
• Manage staffing, hiring, performance reviews, and retention of Underwriters.
Oversee training, development, and career growth for the underwriting team.

Required Skills & Experience
• Minimum of 5 years of progressive mortgage underwriting experience (Conventional, FHA, VA, USDA, ect).
• Minimum of 2 years in a leadership/supervisory role managing multiple direct reports.
• Expert knowledge of mortgage lending, underwriting guidelines, and federal/state regulatory requirements.
• Required endorsements: FHA DE, VA, SAR, and any state-specific certifications.
• Strong knowledge of documentation requirements (tax returns, financials, income verification, etc.).
• Strong communication, organizational, analytical, and leadership skills.
Experience with internal systems and Microsoft Office (Word, PowerPoint, Excel).
