Job Description

Insight Global is looking for a Materials Engineer to sit onsite (hybrid) in Sunnyvale, CA for a top client in the AR/VR space. Our client brings together world-class experts to develop and ship groundbreaking augmented and virtual reality products. The Materials Innovation team is seeking a Materials Engineer with the ability to bring new materials to consumer products at scale. Responsibilities include:



* Understand the optical systems in FRL's product roadmap and identify risks and opportunities related to materials.

* Find the right optical material and coating design and process to accomplish system level optical performance

* Drive development of novel optical material technologies to enable new capabilities in future consumer devices, either internally or with external partners.

* Support technical program leaders in the development of new technologies and remove material barriers from the path to commercialization.

* Provide optical materials expertise throughout the full hardware development cycle.

* Define and execute testing and evaluation of materials to determine performance and drive material selection.

* Seamlessly transition materials technology to high volume production.

Required Skills & Experience

* B.S. in Materials Science and Engineering, Physics, Chemistry, Mechanical Engineering or other relevant degree with 3 years of work experience. OR

* M.S. and B.S. in Materials Science and Engineering, Physics, Chemistry, Mechanical Engineering or other relevant degree with 1 year of work experience. OR

* Ph.D., M.S. and B.S. in Materials Science and Engineering, Physics, Chemistry, Mechanical Engineering.

* GPA above 3.5

* Understanding of fundamentals of materials science, including structure-property relationships, characterization and process engineering.

* Solid understanding of mechanical properties of materials, including the fundamentals of fracture mechanics.

* Solid understanding of organic materials/polymers, their properties and how to process these materials.

* Experienced with and comfortable in a lab environment, experience with hands-on materials testing and sample preparation.

* Track record of collaborating well with colleagues and serving internal customers.

* Operates with a bias for action and used to working in a fast-paced culture.

Nice to Have Skills & Experience

* Solid understanding of optical properties of materials

* Solid understanding of electrical properties of materials

* Experience with the following characterization techniques: TMA, DMA, FTIR, XRD, nanoindentation, fracture mechanics testing

* Expertise with with optically clear adhesives and associated processing parameters

* Expertise with injection molding of elastomers and plastics

* Experience with developing and shipping hardware (consumer electronics, automotive, aerospace, biomedical, etc.)

* Experience managing overseas vendors to deliver parts.
