Job Description
This position serves as a General Accountant 3 in Financial Services for the Health System, comprising the Medical Center hospital and clinics, the primary Care Network, and the Schools of Health. This is a critical and strategic role that advises the Assistant Controller, the Controller and senior management regarding the applicability and implementation of Governmental Accounting Standards (GASB). This position reports to the Medical Center Assistant Controller and primarily has management responsibility for financial and accounting services for the Medical Center. This position will provide customer support multiple constituents including operational departments, the CFO, and Patient Financial Services and will collaborate with numerous critical areas, including Budget, Capital Finance, Accounts Payable, IT, and Decision Support.
This position will be responsible for hands-on managing and overseeing the daily operations of the Medical accounting and General Accounting team, including month-end/year-end close, internal and external audits, analyzing financial data, producing financial reports and statements, ensuring timely, accurate and proper recording of accounting transactions, and establishing and enforcing proper accounting methods. This position will also be responsible for establishing and implementing changes in Medical Center accounting practices and procedures, establishing and training policies and principles, developing and recommending strategies for strengthening and enhancing internal controls, documenting appropriate accounting treatment for various transactions, projects involving intercompany transfers and consolidation with the Medical Center and managing a team of approximately three to six team members.
Required Skills & Experience
- 4-5+ years of Public Accounting experience
- Bachelors in Accounting from state or private university (no online degrees)
- Thorough Knowledge of accounting function and assignment
- Thorough Knowledge of financial transactions and financial systems
- Thorough Knowledge of GAAP theories and practices and analysis of moderate accounting projects
- Excellent MS Office including Excel, Word, Outlook, PowerPoint and Visio. Intermediate to advanced skill set in Microsoft Excel, including (but not limited to) Pivots, Sumifs, IFs, and Vlookups.
- Demonstrated professional level of analytical, statistical and mathematical skills to conduct complex financial analyses.
- Proven project management skills with the ability to contribute to or lead part of a multi-functional team and to assume responsibility for coordination and completion of complex projects requiring interactions with many individuals.
- Comfortable in a FAST pace intercompany environment
- Experience working within GASB or FASB standards
- Auditing experience
Nice to Have Skills & Experience
- CPA or experience working at the Big 4 withing public accounting
