Job Description

An employer is looking for a Lab Automation Associate to join their team in San Diego, CA. The employer is an academic and scientific research institute in the biosciences industry and the Lab Automation Associate will assist the High Throughput Screening (HTS) department with functions related to the different biochemical and cell-based assay protocols. The primary responsibility will be using the Echo Acoustic Dispenser to spot compounds onto microplates, generally in the form of assay ready plates (ARPs). You will provide lab automation expertise to collaboratively develop and implement small volume HTS screens. Duties will include programming the robot and robotic components, assay implementation on the automation, robot operation, and troubleshooting.



Responsibilities:

* Supports in the HTS Engineering Team's Operation of the robotic platform(s)

* Primary responsibility will be operation of the Echo Acoustic Dispenser to spot compounds onto plates

* Supports laboratory automation to reformat compounds and/or execute HTS assays in 96-, 384- and/or 1536-well format plates

* Liaise with local scientists to provide interface between them and robotic automation and instrumentation found in the lab

* Participate in troubleshooting, service, and daily maintenance of the various types of ancillary robotic automation and instrumentation found in the lab. This includes liquid handlers (Echo, Bravo, Tecan), plate readers (ViewLux, Envision, Pherastar), plate washers/dispensers, etc

* Under supervision, conduct experiments and maintain detailed records of experiments and outcomes

* Apply the theories and methods of a life science discipline to interpret and perform analyses of experiment results; offer suggestions regarding modifications to procedures and protocols in collaboration with senior researcher

* After training, troubleshoot programming and mechanical problems with the laboratory automation

* Help with general lab maintenance as needed; maintain lab stock, manage chemical inventory and safety records, and provide general lab support as needed

* Assist with orientation and training of new staff or students on lab procedures or techniques

Required Skills & Experience

* Bachelor's degree in a STEM principle

* 0 - 2 years related experience preferred

* Working knowledge of biology and chemistry

* Mechanical aptitude and an interest in laboratory automation

* Experience with laboratory automation equipment

* Knowledge of VBA or similar programming language is a plus

* Knowledge of basic networking concepts is a plus

* Ability to effectively interpret data from screening readouts, troubleshoot screens on-the-fly and communicate findings to technical personnel

* Experience working with engineers and scientists to develop new automation platforms is a plus

* Excellent written, organizational and oral communication skills
