Job Description

Insight Global is looking for a Senior Materials Engineer with a specialization in industrial protective coatings to join a team of professionals at one of the largest testing and research labs in North America, on-site in Surrey BC. This client is considered a global leader in energy research, consulting, testing, and systems integration, and serves power utilities, oil and gas companies, automotive, and electrical utility equipment manufacturers. Under the direction of the Team Lead of Materials Solutions, the Materials Engineer will work with Senior Engineers and Senior Technologists on projects focused on corrosion assessment and management and protective industrial coatings systems. They may also support projects involving general materials consulting, including component failure analysis, materials characterization and mechanical property testing projects. This person will be expected to provide engineering consulting related to these services, prepare budgets and proposals, prepare and/or review coating specifications and test plans, conduct coating system failure analysis, provide consulting on corrosion mitigation practices and novel protective coatings systems, schedule tests and inspections, prepare and/or review test plans, collect and analyze test data, prepare technical and test reports, and market the department's services. Most of the work will involve project management of multi-faceted projects with a focus on coatings and corrosion in hydroelectric generation systems, which can include laboratory and field duties. Leading projects with a general materials engineering focus (such as materials characterization and selection or mechanical property testing) will comprise a smaller proportion of the workload.



Key responsibilities:

* Manage projects (scope, schedule, and budgets) of moderate complexity or support projects of higher complexity;

* Participate in design of project methodology and prepare quotations and technical or test reports;

* Plan, schedule, and execute testing and inspections, both in-house and in the field, considering availability of technologist staff, equipment, and customer needs;

* Coordinate and assist technologists involved in field and lab testing and inspections;

* Develop processes to improve the efficiency of operations;

* Work with multiple contractors and clients at any given time; and

* Initiate and maintain professional relationships with clients, other departments, outside consultants, contractors and suppliers in order to gather and communicate information and resolve issues of concern

Required Skills & Experience

* Materials, Mechanical (with focus in materials) or Chemical (with focus in materials or corrosion) Engineering degree recognized by universities in Canada

* 5+ years practical work experience and familiarity with coating

o Experience in design, testing, application, and specification of protective coatings systems for industrial environments

o Knowledge of surface finishes, preparation requirements, application techniques and technologies, curing process, testing requirements, and pass/fail criteria

o Knowledge of coating system varieties, compositions, properties, etc.

o Familiarity with internationally recognized testing, inspection, and design standards related to coatings (NACE, ISO, ASTM, etc.)

* AMPP/NACE Certified Coatings Inspector / CIP Level 2 Course certification or equivalent experience

* Registered or eligibility for registration as a Professional Engineer (P.Eng) with Engineers and Geoscientists BC (EGBC)

Nice to Have Skills & Experience

* The ideal candidate will have expertise in industrial paint coatings or have worked as a Coatings Engineer in one or more of the following practice areas:

o Coating Consulting and Engineering

o Coating Manufacturing and R&D

o Industrial Coating Applicators

o Industrial Asset Management and Maintenance

o Marine and Shipbuilding

o Non-destructive Testing and Consulting

* Additional experience in materials testing, failure analysis, welding, and/or non-destructive testing
