Job Description

About The Role

The Sr. Manufacturing Engineer for Chassis Fabrication is the technical authority on structural steel fabrication processes — cutting, drilling, coping, fit-up, welding, and surface treatment. You own the process from raw steel to completed structural frame: setting the standards, solving the hard problems, and ensuring the fabrication line sustains the throughput we need. This role leads the fabrication-focused manufacturing engineering staff and reports to the Director of Manufacturing.

Responsibilities

Process Ownership

• Own all fabrication process standards: cutting, drilling, coping, fit-up, tack welding, weld sequencing, distortion control, and post-weld treatment.

• Design and document fabrication work instructions to AWS D1.1 Structural Welding Code requirements.

• Establish and maintain the welding procedure specification library; ensure all production welders are qualified per AWS D1.1.

• Define and control fit-up tolerances for corner casting placement — dimensional accuracy here is non-negotiable.

• Own the fabrication quality plan: in-process inspection points, dimensional verification, and weld inspection criteria.

Line Performance

• Own fabrication takt time analysis: measure actual cycle times, identify bottlenecks, and drive continuous improvement.

• Lead root-cause analysis on fabrication defects, dimensional nonconformances, and weld rejections.

• Evaluate new fabrication equipment and processes; develop capital justification for investments that improve throughput or reduce defects.

• Support robotic weld cell integration: weld path programming strategy, fixturing requirements, and quality verification.

Standards

• Maintain the AWS D1.1 structural welding program: WPS/PQR library, welder qualification records, and inspection records.

• Own the material traceability program: mill cert verification, heat/lot tracking, and floor identification.

• Working knowledge of AWS D1.1 Structural Welding Code: WPS development, PQR testing, welder qualification, and in-process inspection.

• Experience designing fabrication work instructions, welding procedures, and quality plans.

• Demonstrated track record improving fabrication throughput and reducing defect rate.

Nice to Have Skills & Experience

Preferred Qualifications

• AWS Certified Welding Inspector (CWI) credential.

• Experience with robotic welding integration for structural steel.
